The False Notion of Perfection

Browse By

It saddens me to know that mankind has always chased perfection, and they will never get it, not on this planet, no. It’s like this idea they carry in their hearts, hoping things remain constant, in a state of perfection or, well, near perfection. But the truth is, this very idea is just daft.

To sustain perfection is a myth. Hell, to even achieve it is. Sadly, people still try to pursue it.

Why do you think nothing can remain perfect for long? Well, because there’s always time in the equation. Time can never let anything perfect, even in theory, remain so.

A patch on the wall caught my eye, and it made me realise:

“Didn’t I get these walls painted spotless once?”

Well, it’s like you have to repaint them from time to time, you know, maintain them, or they will fade away with time. Yet again, you think you’ve got it, every corner of the house, and when you look closely, there will always be weird brush marks, improper strokes, or undone corners.

I had bought these new headphones that I packed back into their box and left untouched for 2 years, and when I reopened them, the earpads had completely dusted off their fabric. There was hardly anything left on it, and to any observer, it would seem as if I had used them pretty roughly. But no, they just ended up becoming prey to the jaws of time.

The point is, nothing in this life can remain eternal. That’s not how the Universe is created. Time is an ever-changing entity that will take you on this journey where not a single day will remain the same for you. Either a cell will die, or a new cell will be born. Even when you repeat a certain sequence of events, your eyes will perceive something different from yesterday, or your senses will feel something unusual. Even when you do absolutely nothing, a day will still pass, and you won’t remain the same. You will still age and become less relevant than the day before.

You try to be someone today, give it a few years, and you will fail to recognise yourself. None of the relationships remains in their core forms. Love will wither because it’s ephemeral. You will move on. Love is bound to wither the more time you spend with anyone. It’s just the way it is. You just have to repaint your cracked walls to remain relevant, or maybe move into a new house. Yet even that wouldn’t be a constant either.

You know, in all of this chaotic game of time, you have to remain calm. First, try to fathom this very unending rising and waning cycle. Then resign to the idea of life being sinusoidal waves with its ups and downs. It’s not a constant. If it were, there would be no fun, no challenges, nothing to keep you on the edge. If you think that you managed to keep a straight line, you will fall hard, or rise so high that you will forget there’s a fall coming.

The trick is to recognise this pattern.

You know what gives me strength today? Knowledge… the knowledge that helps me see beyond every happy and sad. The knowledge that says—And this too shall pass!
